Snus Review: DrSnus vs. Olde Viking Original

So, after GN Tobacco folka sent me this letter and claimed that my Doctorate of Snusology was printed at home (it was) on a dot matrix printer (again true), they must have seen my blog which said, “I haven’t had any snus made by these guys, and I probably won’t unless people start raving about it or it shows up in my mailbox.” Well, guess what showed up in the mail?

A huge envelope with… two tins of Olde Viking Original Snus.

Review: So the tin is odd. It’s bigger than a General tin, but there’s no lid. Also, it says “Limited Edition.” What does that mean? I don’t know. But one would suppose that it means the fine folks at GN will stop making it sometime soon.

I really dislike the name of this snus. Olde Viking. Vikings didn’t use snus. Old isn’t spelled with a “e” at the end except in the name of shitty British pubs. It’s like someone from Asia came over to the U.S. and started a hot dog stand called Olde Navajo Dogs.

Now, this might be sacrilegious to some, but this snus tastes similar to General Original to me. That’s probably the idea. However, it’s not a clone. The citrus flavor has a different characteristic; it’s a little sweeter and comes on fairly strong. Olde Viking also seems less salty and less moist.

I kept mine in for an hour and I can’t really find anything major to bitch about, which is kind of disappointing. I detect a little sourness once the flavor wears off, but it’s not overwhelming and it takes a while to get to. I also think the citrus comes on a little strong at first, but again this seem minor. Also, the labels aren’t centered on the top of the can. Now I’m nitpicking.

Also worth mentioning is that this snus is made using somewhat controversial methods. The company has said it’s totally legit. GN also said that they’re coming out with data sometime soon. Until then, I’d take Larry’s word on it, as I think he’s probably laid out this issues the best.

The Prognosis:
Not bad at all. I’d probably use it again, but I’m not a real doctor… so what do I know?
