New Texas Tobacco Tax
Apparently, the legislators have passed a law to tax tobacco and send it to health care. Here’s an excerpt of the text:
“the tax rate for each can or package of a tobacco product other than cigars is $1.22 per ounce and a proportionate rate on all fractional parts of an ounce.”
Since a typical snus tin (24 grams) is under an ounce (28.3 grams), we’re looking at quite a steep increase. According to a source at a tobacco PAC, the language that included the tobacco tax increase was added last minute, catching many off guard.
I don’t believe they’ll try to get in on mail order snus, so most of us are safe… for now.
