Ettan Green Dragon

In an attempt to improve the seemingly perfect Ettan Dragon, I stopped by the grocery story and picked up some wasabi for my newest creation…

Ettan Green Dragon

On the first pass, I mixed about a tablespoon of Pearl River Bridge Superior Light Soy Sauce with about one inch of S&B wasabi from a tube. It takes some mixing to dissolve the wasabi, but once it’s done it’s worth it. The burn is not nearly as strong as Ettan Fire. Instead it’s a mild warm tingle much like snus sometimes tingles anyway. The tingle is local and doesn’t spread in your mouth. The wasabi doesn’t much affect the flavor of soy sauce, and it’s still very yummy.

An hour into it, it’s still a mild, warm burn that’s not too hot. This is not even close to the heat produced by Fire. And, when you move the portion around, the wasabi burn subsides quite quickly.

Let’s wee what happens when we double the amount of wasabi…

Wow. Doubling the amount of wasabi has increased the burn by more than I thought. It’s not overpowering, but it doesn’t let you forget that your a moron who just stuck wasabi in his lip. Again, the heat doesn’t spread, but it does open up your sinuses a bit. It’s kind of giving me a strange feeling in my head. It’s a nice, slow buzz with some mild head tingles…

On the tongue, you can really taste the horseradish flavor at this strength. I usually hate this flavor, but here it’s not terrible. The soy sauce masks it well, and the tobacco flavors of the Ettan is still noticeable in the background. Again, on removal the heat largely dissipates, although there is some lingering warmth…

Now let’s double it again. I want a burn that makes the back side of my lip feel like it was hit with a nuclear bomb…

With this much wasabi, the flavor isn’t nice anymore. It tastes like dirty wasabi socks. And now the drip has heat, pouring dragon breath all over my mouth. Strangely the heat is not much greater than what it was at half the strength. Apparently, we’re getting diminishing wasabi returns.

After fifteen minutes, it’s still gross, it still burns, and I’ve had enough wasabi snus for now.

I really like Ettan Green Dragon, and I highly recommend it to other advanced snusers, but stick to one or two inches of wasabi. Four is just unnecessarily stupid.

Do you dare?

Interesting. As an old Japan hand I wonder if not a Japanese condiment would go best with a Japanese soy sauce. Maybe they are too salty considering the pre-existing salt in snus?

I thought about that when I was buying the wasabi, but I’m so in love with that soy sauce, i figured I make the faux pas and no one would catch me…
    Silly me.

That is cool. Some would say the mixing of snus with soy (not to mention the wasabi) is the faux pas. I wouldn’t though. Experiments like this is what distinguishes us from the animals. When I try your experiment it will be with what I have at hand and that will probably mean Japanese. Marukin is my fave brand. Perhaps I’ll use their tarty soy/ponzu mix…
